An old saying is that no one ever got rich working for
someone else. Like everything, there are exceptions to
that rule, but it’s a pretty accurate statement.
So people who work nine-to-five for wages start thinking
about how great it would be to become the “boss
of my own business.”
Having Your Own Business
There are advantages to having your own business just
as there are certain drawbacks. For most people who start
out on the road to entrepreneurial independence, the
advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
* First advantage--you make the rules. When you have
a good idea about how you can do something more efficiently,
there is no chain of command to put your ideas forward.
It’s your own business, you like it, you do it!
* Next, you set the schedule. Most likely you will work
more hours than you did punching a clock, but you are
working for yourself and the rewards are all yours.
* Third, you make the business decisions. Working for
a salary, you no doubt noticed that management often
made questionable decisions which only complicated the
work. As entrepreneur, you can quickly decide to make
changes if something is not working. There is no tangle
of upper and middle management to go through.
* Fourth, setting up your own business has everything
to do with your passion--that business that you feel
strongest about, that thing you love. As your own boss,
you take your particular slant and make it work.
* Fifth, there is a prestige that accompanies owning
your own business that you cannot get by being a cog
in someone else’s wheel.
The downside can become opportunity for the alert business
owner.
Yes, there are some disadvantages. With your own business,
you are solely responsible for everything--finances,
production, marketing, and the like. You cannot leave
everything at the office when you go home. The headaches
and the problems are yours alone. You may have to spend
some lean years getting you own business up and running.
Most people agree, however, the advantages far outweigh
the negatives in running your own business. There are
countless resources available today for new entrepreneurs
to help solve business problems and, more importantly,
even head off some of the problems before they arise.
